The next book the TSS book group will read is The Ten Green Bottles by Vivian Kaplan. The meeting will be at Marlene Plotnick’s home on March 21st at 7:15 pm.
The book is about a Jewish family living in Austria in the 1920’s and 30’s before Hitler takes over Austria. The family is tormented and disenfranchised and they seek shelter in the only place that will take them: Shanghai. Shanghai presents an incongruent world of immense wealth and privilege for some and poverty for the masses, with opium dens and decadent clubs as well as rampant disease and a raging war between nations. This is the story of Nini Karpel’s struggles that she recounts to her daughter Vivian Kaplan many year later.
This true story depicts the fierce perseverance of one family, victims of the forces of evil, who overcame suffering of biblical proportion to survive. It was a time when ordinary people became heroes.
